St. Vincent's School
A Specialist School for Sensory Impairment and Other Needs
Maths
At St Vincent’s our vision for mathematics is to provide every pupil with a rich, accessible, and inspiring curriculum that nurtures confidence, curiosity, and a love of learning. Using the White Rose Maths curriculum as our foundation, we ensure that mathematical ideas are introduced in small, carefully sequenced steps so that all learners can build secure knowledge and understanding over time. For pupils with visual impairments, we place a strong emphasis on inclusion and accessibility, adapting resources and approaches so that abstract concepts become meaningful and tangible.
Through the use of tactile materials, braille and large-print resources, auditory strategies, and assistive technology, we create learning experiences that are multi-sensory, practical, and engaging. We aim to develop fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills in a way that values exploration and resilience, enabling pupils to make connections within mathematics and apply their learning to real-life situations. Above all, our vision is for pupils to see themselves as capable mathematicians who can think critically, work independently, and use mathematics as a tool to navigate and understand the world around them.
