St. Vincent's School
A Specialist School for Sensory Impairment and Other Needs
Art and Design
Our vision for Art and Design is to provide an inclusive, inspiring, and empowering learning experience where every pupil is valued as a creative individual. We believe that Art and Design play a vital role in developing self-expression, communication, and confidence, and that it can open doors to understanding the world in new and meaningful ways. It provides pupils with visual and sensory impairments the opportunity to explore creativity, self-expression, and imagination in ways that are accessible, meaningful, and inclusive. We believe that every pupil has the right to experience the joy of making and responding to art, and that creativity should be celebrated as a powerful form of communication and identity.
Using Kapow at Key Stage 2 and Oak National Academy at Key Stage 3, we deliver a progressive curriculum that introduces pupils to artistic techniques, materials, and cultural traditions. Lessons are carefully adapted to meet diverse needs, with a strong emphasis on multisensory approaches. Pupils are encouraged to engage through touch, texture, sound, movement, and collaborative practice, ensuring that barriers are reduced and independence and confidence are promoted.
Our vision is for pupils to enjoy Art as a subject that values personal expression and fosters curiosity. Through creative experiences, pupils are supported to develop fine and gross motor skills, experiment with materials, and build resilience in problem-solving and design. They are also introduced to a wide range of artists and artistic traditions, helping them to make meaningful connections between their own work and the wider world.
Design Technology
At our school, Design & Technology enables pupils with visual and sensory impairments to develop creativity, problem-solving skills, and practical independence. Using Kapow at KS2 and Oak National Academy at KS3, our curriculum is carefully adapted to ensure all learners can explore designing, making, and evaluating through multisensory approaches. Pupils engage with a range of materials and processes, including Cooking and Nutrition, to develop essential life skills, build confidence, and make meaningful connections to the world around them. D&T at our school empowers pupils to express ideas, experiment safely, and see themselves as capable, imaginative, and resourceful creators.
Cooking and Nutrition
At St Vincent’s, our vision for Cooking and Nutrition is to inspire and equip all pupils, including those with visual and/or sensory impairments, to develop lifelong knowledge, skills, and confidence in food, nutrition, and healthy living. We believe that access to a rich, practical, and inclusive Cooking and Nutrition curriculum is essential for fostering independence, wellbeing, and personal development.
Our vision is grounded in the belief that all pupils, regardless of their sensory or visual abilities, can become competent, creative, and confident cooks, capable of making informed choices about what they eat, understanding the nutritional value of food, and appreciating its role in culture, society, and the environment. We aim to make learning accessible, multisensory, and empowering, using tactile, auditory, and practical approaches to ensure that every pupil can engage fully with the curriculum.
