On Thursday 29th June a group of students travelled to London for The Young Green Briton Challenge Finals which were held in The House of Lords.

The Challenge supports students aged 11-14 to learn and apply design, innovation, business and other transferable skills, empowering young people to explore local climate and sustainability issues and design entrepreneurial solutions (Eco-Ventures) or campaigns (Eco-Campaigns) to address the problems they identify.

Our school gained a place in the final with the Eco Fairy Garden Project led by Mr. McSorley.

Pupil repurposed old wood in school to make bug "fairy houses" and combined with seeds of hope harvested in school, helped create Eco Fairy Gardens.

It was to our delight that St. Vincent's was one of four schools who won nationally and we were presented with the award by BBC presenter Chris Packham.

Mr McSorley brought a group of pupils to Three Sisters Race Circuit for a driving experience provided by the charity 'Speed of Sight.' Speed of Sight is a charity that gives life changing driving experiences for the blind and disabled. It was set up by Mike Newman who holds several Guinness World Records for being the fastest blind driver in different vehicles.

The pupils got to experience driving in a specially fitted car, while accompanied by a professional rally driver they were able to take control of the driving. It was an amazing day and all down to the kindness of Ken Murphy who raised the money to take pupils from our school on the experience.

“Merseyside Police – Visual Impairment Protocol”

New Visual Impairment Protocol introduced by Merseyside Police to safeguard those living with sight loss

On Monday, 23rd August 2021, Merseyside Police will begin using a newly created Visual Impairment Protocol, which helps safeguard visually impaired members of the community who need to confirm if a person at their door is a police officer.

Use of the protocol is optional, but it does add a layer of security and assurance when visual identification of a police officer by their uniform or warrant card is impractical.

The protocol can be used by anyone with a visual impairment, to any degree. Other eligible service users would include anyone who cares for or supports someone who is visually impaired.

The service user is safeguarded by allowing them to verify the identity of a police officer that has called at their address, before letting them into the premises. This verification is facilitated by the Police Contact Centre, either over the phone or by the attending officer using an agreed password.

There are two scenarios when the protocol can be used. The first is when the service user calls the police and they need to verify the identity of the officer that subsequently attends their address. The second is when the service user needs to verify the identity of a police officer that has called at their address but did not initiate the visit. In the second scenario, the visit is either planned, such as a pre-arranged appointment, or it is unplanned, and they were not expecting the police to call at the address.

Similar protocols have been implemented in other police forces across the UK.  Merseyside Police has adapted the protocol for use across the force area and police officers and staff have been briefed on its use.

The force has consulted members of its own Disability Support Network and community partners including St Vincent’s School in Liverpool, during the development of the protocol. Two documents have been created with accessible formatting to provide service users with more information – an overview, which provides details and advice, plus a quick reference guide which outlines the steps used in the protocol.

This information can also be found on the force website at www.merseyside.police.uk/vip

Kellogg's & St Vincent's Collaboration Success!

Kellogg's.jpg

To mark World Sight Day, Kellogg’s is today launching Coco Pops boxes for blind and partially sighted people as a trial in almost 60 Co-op stores across the UK.

Through the journey Kellogg's has worked with such inspiring people who have supported the business in understanding the requirements needed for accessible packaging for those with sight-loss. A key voice was St. Vincent's School, a specialist school for sensory impairment and other needs, who presented what accessible packaging meant to them. Technology and braille came out as two key elements. Kellogg's is delighted to have incorporated their ideas in to its accessible packaging strategy.

Winners at the Educate Award 2019 for Innovation in Education.

The creative strengths of St. Vincent’s pupils are channelled into designing access to sports technology to facilitate inclusion, participation and friendship generation impacting on health and wellbeing. The ideas designed by pupils supported by Liverpool Hope University and Liverpool John Moore’s University ‘service-learning’ volunteers are placed as content for the physical SIGHTBOX including such ideas as a ‘boccia grid’ a ‘running line’ and’ I Rugby Ball’ alongside the traditional ‘ball with a bell’ . A surrounding curriculum links participation with entrepreneurial learning enabling pupils to demonstrate their employability and connect with further content design and research.

In collaboration with Rotary International and supportive school networks Nationally ( supporting Social Moral Spiritual and Cultural/ Citizenship curricula) , SIGHTBOXES have been bought and sent to VI schools from St. Vincent’s including Pakistan, India, Rwanda, Gambia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Kenya, Indonesia, China, Ethiopia, Nepal , Tanzania, Virgin Islands and Peru . St. Vincent pupils acting as the ‘trainers of the trainers’ are using

communication technologies (facilitating thus more research and development in this area) to teach the overseas VI student peers how to use the content. Using the surround curriculum overseas schools are now asking St. Vincent’s to collaborate on making more sightbox content ideas generating new trade innovations in synergy with UN SDGS 17.3.4.5.8.10.

Simultaneously, St. Vincent’s pupils are teaching local and national VI pupils how to use the content and working collaboratively to break down barriers towards inclusion.
