PE
In PE we aim to promote pupil independence and self-confidence by engendering a positive ‘can do’ approach in all pupils. We aim to encourage an awareness of the benefits of leading an active and healthy lifestyle whilst having fun.
We strive to deliver a broad range of physical challenges and endeavour to provide pupil support and guidance to enable all pupils to achieve their potential. In this we liaise closely with other specialist disciplines such as Mobility and Physiotherapy.
All pupils are allocated 55 minutes of PE and 55 minutes of Swimming per week. PE is a non-examined subject at St. Vincent’s. However, pupils may be entered for AQA Unit Award accreditations.
All children follow the National Curriculum. Most pupils work within assessment levels 1- 4, and for some P-Levels are appropriate.
Extra Curricular Activities
All pupils are encouraged to participate and
compete in a wide range of events and competitions.
To date such events have included:
Key Stage 1 Initial assessments are made and courses are structured to meet the needs of individuals. Pupils are encouraged to build upon a natural enthusiasm for movement, using it to explore and learn about the world.
Aspects covered include; gymnastics, games, dance/movement, athletic activities, ball-skills and swimming.
Key Stage 2 We aim to build upon previous knowledge. The challenges are tailored to the individual and pupils are helped to develop a sense of teamwork and fair play. In this stage we exceed the National Curriculum requirements in terms of activities undertaken.
Key Stage 3 Whilst continuing to follow the National Curriculum KS3 areas of study, we also introduce new elements of trampolining, goalball etc.
Year 8 pupils attend an Outdoor and Adventurous Activities Residential in the Lake District. In Year 9, pupils are introduced to the multi-gym as a means of developing strength training. They are encouraged and guided towards raising their personal fitness levels.
Key Stage 4 Pupils are expected to take increasing responsibility for their involvement. They are helped to plan their post school and out of school programmes of activity. In KS4 lesson time our students are given a degree of flexibility in terms of selecting preferred activities.
