Music
Music lessons take place every week from Foundation Stage to Key Stage 3, and as an Integrated Option Subject at Key Stage 4. It has a very creative foundation, with emphasis on the child composing their own music.
Ultimately we see music as a life skill, which will help our young people make a bridge into the sighted world. For this reason we encourage students to “play by ear”, so that they can take their music anywhere. Many of our students reach a high standard of playing on instruments such as keyboards, drums, guitar and also voice. We have several instrumental ensembles and also a school choir.
We follow the full National Curriculum up to the end of Key Stage 3.
Lessons are always practical and students
can use the full range of resources available:
Keyboards, percussion, guitars as well as up
to date Music technology provision.
We have our own Recording Studio where students can record their own compositions.
If Music is taken as an integrated option at Key Stage 4 students are entered for AQA GCSE and Entry Level Certificate.
As well as offering a full curriculum we have a residency with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. This takes place from January to June every year. It involves members of the orchestra coming into class to support pupils’ music making.
Each year is rounded off with a Whole School Performance. Some players also teach instrumental lessons on an individual basis.
ABOVE ALL MUSIC IS FUN.
Music Therapy
Music Therapy is offered on an individual
and group basis, by a State Registered Music
Therapist.
Referrals can be made for pupils needing extra support. Music Therapy takes place on a weekly basis for identified pupils.
However, we also recognise music as a communication skill, which helps our students develop in many other areas. These include listening skills and teamwork as well as it being a creative outlet.
