Mathematics

Foundation Stage
One of the six areas taught in a daily focus lesson is mathematical development (MD) using methods suitable for pupils with VI. It is also reflected in other daily learning areas.

Key Stages 1, 2 and 3
Across key stages 1 to 3 pupils follow the National Numeracy Strategy and the Key Stage 3 Framework for teaching maths adapted were necessary for the individual. The four attainment targets covered are:

  • Using and applying
  • Number and Algebra
  • Shape, space and measure
  • Handling data

Mathematical ideas are reinforced in other curricular areas e.g. measurement in Science.

Pupils are assessed by either their teacher or by external assessment at the end of each Key Stage.

Key Stage 4

GCSE
Pupils study AQA Mathematics Specification A. There are three tiers of assessment, Foundation (C-G), and Higher (A-C).

Pupils take two papers each worth 40% of the total mark and a coursework element worth 20%. The course work comprises two projects one of which is a Handling Data task and the other involve Number and Algebra.

Entry Level
Edexcel Entry level at level (1), (2) and (3). It is wholly assessed by teachers, can provide for progression to GCSE. It recognizes small steps of achievement and is assessed using practical work and in class tests.

Unit Award Scheme
Pupils work on individual unit topics, which are selected to develop their mathematical skills. The units are Nationally accredited under the AQA unit award scheme.

Key Skills Numeracy / Skills for Life
This accredited course is offered at Post 16, and develops all aspects of numeracy for life.

BTEC
The Money Management unit of this course is offered alongside units undertaken by the students as part of their college activities.

Adult Numeracy / Skills for Life
This accredited course is offered at post 16. this course comprises of three components:
data handling, number and measure, shape and space.
